Rain doesn’t dampen spirits as hundreds of runners and walkers take part in 2016 Spires & Steeples Challenge.
The weather may have not been on our side as heavy rain swept in for most of the morning and parts of the afternoon of this year’s Spires and Steeples Challenge which took place on Sunday 16 October. Not deterring participants, over 420 registered entries made 2016 the best year so far for Events Manager Donna Sutton who has been managing the Challenge now for 5 years.
“I’m very happy with this year’s numbers,” says Donna “we were aiming for 400 so to get over our target is a great achievement."
“We’ve been very lucky in previous years with the weather but it didn’t dampen the spirits of participants; if anything it made them more determined to finish!”
Participants had the option to take part in the 26 or 13 mile challenge which follows the Spires & Steeples Arts & Heritage Trail, an off road trail that follows way marked public footpaths and bridleways crossing open fields and countryside lanes, finishing at the National Centre for Craft and Design in Sleaford. Participants also had the option to run or walk which opens up the challenge to more people and to encourage them to get outside and enjoy the countryside.
This year’s event was captured by Andrew Scott of Lincoln in Photo who braved the elements to snap walkers and runners as they made their journey across the Lincolnshire countryside. Photos are available to view at https://andrewscott.smugmug.com/2016-Spires-and-Steeples-Chall.
The Challenge is in aid of WheelPower which provides sports wheelchairs, training and support to disabled people. Participants are also welcome to raise funds for their own respective charities.
“I want to say a huge thank you to our volunteers.” continues Donna “Without them the Challenge just wouldn’t happen; they give their time to help run this event and their wonderful enthusiasm is inspiration to us all.”
The Challenge may be over for another year but plans are already under for 2017 which is also the event’s 10th year anniversary.
