This summer, The National Centre for Craft & Design has been a hub for design and making led by the award winning design practice, NEON (Mark Nixon and Viliina Koivisto) through their residency and retrospective exhibition, Fantastical Architecture, Art and Design. NEON: In the Studio.
NEON have been getting gallery visitors involved in a whole host of fun design orientated challenges and activities, including the opportunity to contribute to a new temporary artwork for Sleaford, which will go on display in Navigation Yard outside of The National Centre for Craft & Design next month. To celebrate the launch of the artwork a block party event will take place in Navigation Yard on Saturday 6 October (12 – 3pm). The free event is open to everyone, with people encouraged to bring food to share (hot drinks provided), dance, party and take part in further creative activities against the backdrop of the finished work. The idea behind the artwork has been to get people involved to help them understand and de-mystify the processes behind designing and making. Participants were asked to consider where the artwork could go, what it could look like, as well as being given the opportunity to design their own artworks and visualise Navigation Yard as a sculpture park. NEON were fascinated by the National Centre of Craft and Design building’s prior use as a seed factory, and with this as their starting point they have invited visitors to the gallery to make a large number of fabric ‘cones’ inspired by the colours and structures of magnified seeds. These component pieces have been designed to work ‘en masse’ to create the final, collaborative piece of artwork that can be re-installed in Sleaford in years to come. Lucy Lumb from The National Centre for Craft and Design commented “NEON’s design practice focuses on utilising everyday materials in extraordinary ways and their approach to the new artwork for Sleaford has been no different. The finished artwork will be the result of engaging people with simple techniques, materials and processes. Although it will only be a temporary feature in the town, the artwork has been realised as something for people in the local area to take pride in, and we hope people will come along to the block party to join in the celebration.” The project has been delivered in partnership with artsNK as part of the Ridges & Furrows Arts and Heritage Trail – where artists are commissioned to work in specific locations and with local communities to celebrate what makes places special.
